The Debra Mann Trio
by Gabriel Ben-Yosef
Editor, Bossa - Brazilian Jazz World Guide
Anyone with a yen for some real bossa nova can get
their weekly fix at Turner Fisheries in the Copley Place Westin
Hotel in Boston from Thursday to Saturday with the Debra Mann Trio.
Mann, whose voice, according to Rebecca Parris, 'wraps
itself around a microphone like a soft feather boa,' is also a delicate,
accurate and sensitive pianist who also composes and arranges. Backed
up by drummer Jack Menna and acoustic bassist Mark Carlsen, the
trio has also performed with Greg Abate and Dan Moretti (both also
featured here in Bossa).
In addition to traditional jazz favorites, the Trio's
repertoire includes a healthy slice of bossa nova. 'Brazilian music
means so much to me,' Mann told Bossa. 'That's why we've invited
Brazilian percussionist Ricardo Frota as a special guest for our
Jobim tribute.'
Menna was no less enthusiastic. 'Man, the beauty
of Brazilian music brings tears to my eyes!' Menna, who's also worked
with Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Rodini, has a natural feel for
subtle improvisation while staying true to the art and is headed
for Brazil soon.
The group's recording 'From the Heart' is available
and features 'The Island' (music by Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins).
The title track is written by Mann and lets you know from the start
that you're in for a gentle, heart-felt performance.
