Debra Mann to play Providence Jazz & Blues Festival
In an effort to bring true American Classical music
to an expanded audience, CapitolArts Providence and The Providence
Black Repertory Company have joined forces to produce the Providence
Jazz and Blues Festival. Now in its eighth year, the Providence
Jazz and Blues Festival began in 1992 as part of the annual Providence
Waterfront Festival. A main stage event, the Providence Waterfront
Jazz Festival was a dallying festival within the quintessential
end of summer party. Throughout the festival's many incarnations,
one fact has remained the same - a commitment to high quality music.
The world of jazz is now on a quest to redefine and
transform itself. Musicians and listeners alike are rediscovering
the past while looking to the future of the art form. Presenting
Ahmad Jamal, virtuoso pianist, with critically acclaimed Ben Allison
& Medicine Wheel, Dominique Eade, and the Debra Mann Quartet reflects
this examination. Vibraphonist Roy Ayers has had a long career,
reinventing himself with changing times. As a tribute to his ability
to endure, he is sampled regularly by some of today's hottest stars.
Chris Combette, hot off a performance at Lincoln Center, represents
jazz branching off to include world music traditions.
Vocalist/pianist Debra Mann fronts her quartet known
throughout New England for its solid chemistry and contagious warmth.
The quartet performs classical jazz standards by the great American
composers, as well as Brazilian composers, and original compositions.
Ms. Mann has performed live on WGBH Radio's 'Music America' program
and with the Boston Pops Orchestra in Symphony Hall.
The blues genre continues to pass the torch to a
new generation while honoring its past masters. The Providence Jazz
& Blues Festival honors Carey Bell, master blues artist. Paul Geremia
keeps the tradition alive, capturing the kind of casual artistry
that comes from decades of practice and hard traveling.
The Providence Jazz & Blues Festival truly represents
the current trends in jazz & blues. Sit back, relax and enjoy today's
best and brightest artists. We doubt you'll find a jazz and blues
event more wide-ranging in the region.
